What is "Good Form" with Exercise?? Are YOU Doing it Right?

The REAL Secret to "Proper form" - with Any Exercise - Explained

 




"Don’t let your knees go over your toes." This is one form cue often given for proper form with squatting.

By form cue, we mean a way of telling someone how to do something.


This can be done by saying words verbally, showing an example visually, and touching physically.


You may have experienced this with your trainer, physical therapist, or coach.

When we learn the form of an exercise, we are told that there is a proper way to: “do it correctly.” You may have gotten these cues from a coach, physical therapist, or onYouTube.

This is based on data points from looking at someone who is performing that exercise well. The way the exercise looks is then taken at face value and explained to another person mainly based on the way it looks- visually.

When trying to learn an exercise, even if you are performing all the points given by your trainer, many times, you are still not doing it "correctly". Why?

It’s not the trainer’s fault - they are usually telling their clients not only what to do, but also showing them how to do it, and even placing their bodies in the proper positions it needs to be in.


Still, the person doesn’t quite look and feel right.

Why is this?- It's no one's fault.

It’s because we have taken something that is a feeling (“good form”)- and reduced it to the way someone looks from the outside.

If we train the same movement always in the same way, we are training a pattern that will only serve the purpose of repeating that exact motion again.

What we really want is to train all sides in the “feeling” of good form - this equates to more than one healthy line of pull within our bodies’.

If we really want to functionally train, the main goal is NOT looking like the form of someone else but shooting instead for - a feeling of connectedness during the movement.

We then want to train different “sides” of that form feeling; different sides of your bodies’ connectedness.

Why?


Well, would you want to live in a new house and only receive a map of the streets to the north of your house? What about everywhere you can go that's south, east, and west?

As teachers, learners, and explorers of our bodies, we naturally mimic what someone looks like while doing an exercise. This is a great start, but to feel form like we want to, we must come up with other solutions.


We can get coaching or advice from the top people in the field, we can train day in and day out but at the end of the day, our body is not fully “functional” until we FEEL WHAT FORM IS.


What is this feeling?


The proper muscles, tendons, joint capsules, ligaments, and bones used in the correct activation order produce a biomechanical sound exercise.


This well-orchastrated event takes place along different pathways of your connective tissue called: FASCIA.


The tricky part is people may look visually different doing this and the pathway to biomechanically sound will look different for different people.

Practicing feeling form has many benefits such as: giving us the biomechanical leverage to “do more with less,” significantly decreases the risk for injury, decreases pain with movement, and helps us live a better quality of life - for longer.

It is hard to teach and understand the “feeling” of “good form.”

How do we get there?- After all good form is much more than meets the eye. The secret is not in the conventional way we tell people.

What is needed is an effective, quick way to immediately go feel it for ourselves - on command. This will allow us to develop a sense of what good form feels like in our individual, unique body.

Instead of getting cues to describe how good form looks, we need to find better ways to get cues on how good form feels. These two things are deceivingly different.
